Edmonton Small Business Tax Guide: What Growing Alberta Companies Miss
Edmonton small business tax essentials: 5% GST, 11% small business rate, AT1, WCB and payroll, the gaps that open as companies grow, and how to catch up.
Edmonton businesses follow Alberta rules: 5% GST only, an 11% combined small business rate, a possible separate AT1 provincial corporate return, and WCB premiums instead of a payroll health tax. The filings that usually slip as an Edmonton business grows are payroll remittances, T4s and the AT1, more than the GST.
Growth checkpoints for Edmonton businesses
Rather than repeat the rate table from our Calgary guide (the provincial rules are identical), here's what changes as revenue climbs:
| Stage | What usually gets added | What gets missed |
|---|---|---|
| ~$30k revenue | GST registration becomes mandatory (canada.ca) | Charging GST from the right date |
| First employee | Payroll account, source deductions, WCB | Remitting on time. Late remittance penalties run 3% to 10% |
| Incorporation | T2 + AT1 + Alberta annual return | The AT1, and the owner's own T1 |
| $500k+ | Tax instalments, bigger HST/GST volumes | Instalment interest, shareholder loan rules |
| $1.5M+ | Quarterly GST filing | The frequency change |
The healthcare and clinic angle
Edmonton has a lot of clinic and allied-health businesses. Many health services are GST-exempt, which means no GST charged and no input tax credits claimed. Clinics that also sell products or cosmetic services often have a mix. Get that mix wrong for a few years and the catch-up is harder. See our clinic guide.
Example (hypothetical)
An Edmonton physiotherapy corporation opened a second location in 2023 and grew to about $1.2M. Payroll was run, but remittances were sometimes late and T4s for 2024 were never filed. The catch-up: reconcile payroll to the remittances, file the late T4s, rebuild the books, file T2s and AT1s, and request penalty relief where there's a real reason for it.
Remote, but not hands-off
Edmonton has no Sansar office. Everything is done online, and the CRA mostly works remotely too. We don't have an Edmonton page on the main site yet, so see our service areas and the corporate tax filing service. One all-inclusive flat rate, backed by our 100% Happiness Guarantee. Start with late tax filing.
