What happens if you don't file

  • Late-filing penalties. For a T2 with a balance owing: generally 5% of the unpaid tax plus 1% per full month late, up to 12 months. Repeat late filers can face double penalties.
  • Daily compound interest on unpaid balances.
  • Demand to file. The CRA can formally require a return by a deadline. See CRA letters.
  • Arbitrary assessments. The CRA can estimate your income and assess tax without your expenses.
  • Lost refunds and credits. GST/HST input tax credits and some refunds have time limits.

  6. Follow through on notices of assessment, payment arrangements and any CRA questions.

Reducing penalties: VDP and taxpayer relief

If the CRA hasn't contacted you yet, the Voluntary Disclosures Program (VDP) may reduce penalties and some interest when you come forward voluntarily. If penalties and interest have already been charged, a taxpayer relief request can ask the CRA to cancel or waive them where circumstances qualify. Sansar Solutions prepares both, included in our all-inclusive flat rate with no separate VDP fee. Learn about VDP and penalty relief →

Late filing FAQ

Is it too late to file my business taxes? No. The CRA accepts late returns, and filing as soon as possible stops penalties from growing and protects you from arbitrary assessments.

Do I have to file a T2 if my corporation had no income? Yes. Every resident corporation must file a T2 for each tax year, even if it was inactive or had no tax payable.

Can I file several years at once? Yes. We prepare and file each missing year in order so that balances and carry-forwards are correct.

Can I file my business and personal taxes separately? If you're a sole proprietor, business income is reported on your personal T1 using Form T2125. If you're incorporated, the corporation files its own T2 and you file a personal T1.

Will the CRA charge interest even if I don't get a penalty? Generally yes. Interest is charged on unpaid balances from the original due date.

How long will it take? Filing is guaranteed within 1 month once we've received all your documents. Multi-year catch-ups typically take 1–2 months. Client delays and bank or CRA delays can extend the timeline.
